Made in Japan: Maruyama Company

Growing up I heard of many things made in Japan. Although some people didn’t think much of Japanese goods back then, I had an appreciation of them due to a father who spent time in Viet Nam and sent stuff home with the Panasonic or Sony name. I knew about electronics but didn’t think much of ceramics, that is until I went to an auction or two and learned how special the Occupied Japan mark was on an item.

While doing my rounds of my favorite thrifts and junk shops I came upon this exquisite figurine.

Vintage Maruyama Colonial Lady Porcelain Figurine Occupied Japan

Vintage Maruyama Colonial Lady Porcelain Figurine Occupied Japan

This colonial beauty is marked “Maruyama Made in Occupied Japan.” Of course I grabbed it up. Not only is it a beautiful figurine, it is in amazing condition without chips, cracks, or crazing. The occupation was in the late 40’s making this beauty over 60 years old. I should look so good when I’m 60.

Being the nosy person I am I tried to research the Maruyama Company. I didn’t find much but I did learn that the Maruyama Company was a leading manufacturer of Japanese ceramics until they ceased production in 1989. Japan has a long history of porcelain art dating back to the 1600s.

Beautiful work.

Fabulous Finds: Schiaparelli Scarf

Sometimes I find some of the most interesting items and this time is no different. While shopping in Sarasota I found some beautiful scarves, silk scarves. Among the scarves was this beautiful red one with an ivory floral border signed by Schiaparelli.

Vintage Schiaparelli Red and Yellow Scarf

Schiaparelli Scarf

Once I saw this scarf I had to learn about Schiaparelli. I remember hearing of her but what? I had research to do.

Elsa Schiaparelli was one of the leading designers of the 20th century, more specifically the Art Deco. A contemporary of Chanel,  her designs were often considered shocking, eccentric, innovative, and flamboyant.

She considered herself an artist first and used fashion as her canvas. Elsa Schiaparelli did not sew but relied on seamstresses to bring her designs to life. She collaborated with Dali on her famous “Lobster Dress” and was recognized by other artists, such as Picasso, Duchamp, and Stravinsky, as an artist.  Schiaparelli Lobster dress illustration from Vogue

Although she will long be remembered for her outrageous designs, her influence exists today.

Organization: My Quest to Conquer Chaos

Damn, that sounds noble. The truth is I am disorganized. If it wasn’t for my daily “to do” list I would get little done. Even with it I am a little bit on the hurting side. So many thoughts and ideas go through my head that I fall off the path quickly. I have to constantly tell myself to finish what I start so I won’t have so many odds and ends to complete.

Well, yesterday was my lucky day. I was on the way to town when I spied a yard sale sign (I swore I wasn’t going to stop before I ever left the house but I shouldn’t swear. I just had to stop). The folks didn’t have too much I was interested in except for a big, 4 drawer file cabinet. Woo Hoo, my name was written all over it, even before I paid for it. Finally a place to keep my million and one patterns (authentic vintage sewing and knitting, of course). Cut a deal with the folks and called the hubby who very lovingly picked it up for me (too big to fit in my car).

After I got home from my shopping trip I found the file cabinet sitting on my front porch waiting for me. My hubby said he would help me with it but I was so excited I started moving things from the storage room. I measured the cabinet to make sure of where to put it then walked it in. Kept a towel under it to keep it from scratching the floor (a scratch would have totally sucked). By the time the hubby came it the cabinet was tucked away just where I wanted it. It is now the home for Butterick patterns and the “Not Yet Listed” books and patterns that were cluttering my storage room.

I still have a long way to go to get the room right but yesterday was a big step in the right direction. I feel like a champ taking control of my life. Therapy couldn’t have made me feel so good. Cheap therapy for $15.

Now all I have to do is put labels on the drawers so I won’t go crazy looking from drawer to drawer. Maybe I’ll get more listed in my Etsy shops now that I know where everything is.

Here’s to gaining control of one’s life. Feels damn good.

Congrats to Enchanting Dreams

Enchanting Dreams’ “Hats Off the Graduate” won last week’s picks. Can’t wait for the interview. Stay tuned.

Miss Eileen’s Etsy Picks 5.27.11 Getting Ready for Father’s Day

Father’s Day is a few weeks away. What a good day to show the men in our lives how much we appreciate them. In my case, the hubby is a creative soul re-doing an old motorcycle, showing me the paint job with awesome orange undertones and metal flecks (I can’t paint with a spray can…. I so appreciate a person who paints well) yet still has time to cook supper when I work and do his own laundry.  I thought it would be a good idea to look at things for the men in our lives on Etsy and allow for shipping time.  As always, poll is on the top left corner. You pick who wins the interview next so don’t forget to vote.

Estate Sale Junky

I guess the time has arrived to admit it, I have a habit. Not drugs or alcohol and I am too cheap to gamble. I am a yard and estate sale junky. I can spot a yard sale sign a mile a way and keep my GPS handy just in case I follow back into a subdivision and can't find my way out. I might not recognize the make or the item but I feel the age of the piece. Makes my little heart go pitter-patter (no fluttering, I would need medication).
There is a local estate sale going on today (the middle of the week!) so I am stopping by to see what's left. I am sure all the good stuff is gone but just maybe something totally cool has been overlooked.
I'll keep you posted.
Here's a couple of things from the last sale I unearthed waiting to be listed in my Goofing Off shop.

I will keep you posted.
Don't forget to vote for this week's finds. Voting ends tonight.

Sewing for Babies

No, this is not like sewing for dummies, it is like “Making things for the babies in your life or who are about to enter your life.” Making something handmade for a new baby is one of the most gratifying things a person can do. In our busy lives it is just too easy, and sometimes almost necessary…or so it seems, to go to the Big Box store and just buy a blanket or whatever. This busy lifestyle makes taking the time to create a baby quilt, sew a dress, or crochet (or knit) a blanket all the more special; it also makes each item created an instant heirloom destined to be treasured and handed down for years to come. While listing patterns I came across a few that can help the person who sews create that very special item that will bring ooohs and ahhs at the next baby shower or baby arrival.

Vintage Simplicity Baby Girl Dress Sewing Pattern Size 6 mons Uncut

This pattern, Simplicity 9353, is size 6 months. Babies grow so fast. A beautiful dress for Passover, Easter, Christmas, or any future family celebration will be so appreciated, especially to a young growing family whose money goes to diapers, child care, and formula.

Baby Accessories Sewing Pattern Simplicity 4636 Uncut Complete

From stroller cover to shopping cart seat protector, Simplicity 4636 has it.

Baby Essentials Sewing Patter McCalls3630 Uncut Complete

McCall’s 3630 includes directions for a quilt, crib caddy, diaper stacker, crib bumper, and dust ruffle. If you know what the decor theme is you can sew accordingly. If not, just use neutral baby-friendly colors to complement the decor.

All of these patterns can help create the heirlooms of tomorrow by creating gifts that come from the heart.

Happy Sewing y’all!

Remember, don’t forget to vote. Contest ends tonight.

Interview with Joan Lester :Tea Time at Sunshine Cottage

Let's Have a Cup of Tea Brooch FREE SHIPPING

Let’s Have a Cup of Tea Brooch

Here is Joan Lester, the creator of Sunshine Cottage and the brooch that you picked in Miss Eileen’s Etsy Picks.

My name is Joan Lester. I live high on a hill in beautiful southern Vermont,  the little town of Saxtons River to be exact. As anyone who lives here will tell you, despite only have 500+ residents, it is the center of the universe! I've been blessed with 4 sons - all grown now, ranging in age from 36 to 23. My oldest and my youngest have added to my blessings by giving me a grandson, Jack, and a grand-daughter, Iris, two more reasons to create! My very tolerant husband of 26 years, Ned, fully supports my endeavors, and turns a blind eye to the fact that I use the whole house as a studio. I design, write and research in the living room, do photo shoots (complete with light box, lights and props) in the kitchen. The computer room is just MINE!! The T.V. room is where I keep all of my yarn and crochet, and then I have a workroom upstairs where I bead, glue, work with papers, glitter etc... Ned can put up with a lot, but slipping around on errant beads is just too much, so I keep that confined to one room.

Japanese Lustreware Snack Set

Japanese Lustreware Snack Set

As for my favorite materials - What day is it? What time is it? My favorite materials change daily, hourly, sometimes by the minute - like when I'm upstairs working at my gluing station and I turn around and spot some beads that have rolled together on my beading table, and suddenly I'm stringing a necklace - my creativity is very ADHD. I suppose if I had to narrow it down I'd say, romantic old graphics, colorful fabrics, soft yarns shiny beads and sparkly glitter - but that's just today.
My favorite color combinations also change frequently, but I would say I tend to stay on the pastel side. Even if I create something in a vibrant red, I tone it down with a soft shade of green. I do like romantic soft shades.

First Lesson Brooch - FREE SHIPPING

First Lesson Brooch

The first thing I made by hand was a pair of shoes for my doll 'Tommy' - in retrospect, it's interesting that all of my dolls were boys, and I had all boys in real life, go figure! We moved when I was about 4 or 5 and our new neighbor, Florrie, (who was a 'wise woman' in more ways than one), became my mentor and the most wonderful friend a little girl could have. Florrie taught me sew, to plant and use plants, how to milk a goat, how to make ice-cream, and so many other things that have influenced who I am today.
I am inspired by living every day - just looking outside, going for a walk, looking at magazines, shopping, cruising around on the computer. I see little snippets of things, maybe the way a group of colors go together, and the next thing you know I have a new idea forming, then I run up to my workroom and start playing with pieces, colors, beads - sometimes it all comes together quickly, sometimes it doesn't, then I just leave my little grouping sitting there and play with it from time to time. Sometimes what I end up with is totally different than what my original idea was.

Along with Florrie, I would say my mom and dad were great inspirations for me. I didn't realize it at the time, but my Mom could do anything. The ratty old chair in the living room needed a new slipcover - my Mom just made it (even using my seamstress, Grandmother's old Singer). Dad wanted a 'Fisherman's' sweater, my Mom just knitted it. She was fearless; she set her mind to something and would just do it! Dad was that way in the kitchen; he did all the cooking (which I guess was odd, but didn't seem it), a little bit of this, a little bit of that - never a recipe, just good old creativity. I still cook the same way. I developed a love of cooking from him, and I cook creatively. I have had a cafe and a bakery, and baked breads for local farmers’ markets for 5 years. It must be genetic as all of my sons love to cook, (2 of them do all the cooking in their households) and 1 of them is a professional chef.
I believe people should buy handmade because each item is unique - even if someone bought 5 of the same item to give as gifts, each one would be slightly different, plus there is an aura about a handmade item, a little piece of its creator, that can never be found in mass-produced, machine-made items. Each artist should create what they love. Even if it doesn't seem as though anyone else would want it the personal touch of the artist will be felt and the creation will appeal to someone. I equally believe that an artist shouldn't create something that doesn't have their whole heart, just because they believe it will make money for them - that lack of heart shows through.
The most valuable lessons I have learned are to be fearless, never give up, always keep growing and evolving, and age doesn't matter!
I approach everything I do from a creative angle. Whether it's cooking a meal, mending a blouse or even cleaning the house, creativity rules!
My work can be seen at sunshinecottage.etsy.com, sunshinecottagekids.etsy.com, and I also have a Facebook page for sunshinecottage, as well as a page on Artfire, and I am in the process of getting a blog together - teatimeatsunshinecottage.blogspot.com
For anyone mentioning this article, when making a purchase, I will happily send them a free 12 cup package of the tea of their choice; for anyone purchasing tea I will include a free refrigerator magnet.

Joan, thank you so much for the interview. I love your lessons; Be Fearless, Never Give Up, Keep Growing and Evolving, and Age Doesn’t Matter.

New Listings in Goofing Off

I found the most adorable patterns from the 60’s. I love the look from then, the big hair teased oh so high, the mini skirts, the shoes, and the jewelry. The models all had this dewy eyed “whatever” kind of look (think Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton).  Well, here are the patterns. Twiggy would have been proud (except she was so skinny they would have hung on her).

Tribal Colors Wine Bottle Cozy

I finally got it done. Last month was the Creative Challenge. Wine was the subject. I had all kinds of ideas and waited way too long to get started. Took me forever to get it right. I think my name should be Day late and a dollar short. Well, anyway, the cozy is done. Yay for me.

100_9060 This is it, the Cowl Neck Wine Bottle Cozy in tribal colors.

100_9065

The cozy is made of 100% cotton yarn and crocheted by yours truly. Good way to keep that bottle of wine cool when on the beach or at the pool. The colors were inspired by Sarasota, white sand, sea grass, and beautiful blue water.

What do you think?

Next creative challenge is fire.

Posted some new patterns in the Etsy and Artfire shops, like this one: Vogue 2878 Infant's Christening Gown, Coat, Bonnet, Pillow, Blanket Sewing Pattern Complete.

Featured Blog Interview with Sophia and Celine: Persine

Here’s the interview with Persine, whose adorable 50’s Inspired Romper  won the poll two weeks ago (yes, I am a little behind. I am working on it).

One Piece Playsuit Romper

One Piece Playsuit Romper

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, affiliations, personal stuff)

My name is Sophia. I live in New York and I sew clothes designed by my sister Celine in Paris. We create dresses based on antique paintings or engravings. Our parents taught us the art of tailoring.

What are your favorite materials?

We like printed cotton fabrics, muslin, voile, embroidered laces, Scottish fabrics, Indian silk...

What is your favorite color combination?

Celine: Turpentine and white.

Sophia: Green and gold.

What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it?

Celine: As a child, the first thing I made was a small clothespin box to store my toys.

Sophia: A red velvet brassiere when I was twelve.
Eunomia

What inspires you?
Celine: When I am looking for originality, I find inspiration in the nature, old pictures, books, museum trips, and sometimes street fashion.

Evening Gown

Evening Gown

Where do your ideas come from?

Our love for Jane Austen books, westerns, and movies from the fifties inspired us to create dresses from those specific eras. We design feminine patterns that would still be appropriate for modern times.

Who is, or was, your greatest inspiration?

Our most beautiful dresses are inspired by Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun’s paintings. She was the official portraitist of Marie Antoinette.

What is your favorite thing to do with your creativity?

Share it with the creativity of others.

Tuck Everlasting

Tuck Everlasting

Why should people buy handmade? Any tips of wisdom on selling handmade items?

Most handmade dresses such as ours are also custom-made, and there is nothing like a dress that fits you perfectly.

What have been the most valuable lessons learned from other artists?

Celine: My creations have to represent me. It has to show the best of me, a New Age miscegenation.

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Empire Gown

Sophia: I’m a journalist and Celine is in law school. We’ll be in Kenya this summer to film a documentary on climate change.
