Vintage Vogue and Fabulous Fifties Sewing Patterns

Sometimes I find the most incredible patterns when I am out and about.

This first pattern, Simplicity 1407, is beautiful! I love the dress. The style is from the late 1940's. The pattern is unprinted...the pattern piece is dotted to tell which piece is which.

Simplicity 1407 Misses' Dress from the 1940's. Size 14, Bust 32 inch. Complete, UNCUT

This outfit from Tamotsu is incredible. I love the long jacket.
Vogue 1334 by Designer Tamotsu, Misses' jackets, dress, and pants in sizes 12-14-16. COMPLETE

Six gored skirts from 1952. Fabulous! A sweater and a pair of heels and the outfit is complete.
Vogue 7780 Misses' Skirts from 1952. Waist 25 inch. COMPLETE

Wearable art. Love it. I hate wearing what everyone else wears. The basic jacket is here and allows the sewer to make a design that fits. From Marcy Tilton.

Happy Sewing! May your seams stay straight and your bobbins stay full.

Upcycled Linen Decorator Pillows

A while back at the local thrift shop I found a dress that was destined for parts unknown. The dress wasn't my style but it was made of linen and had wonderful machine embroidery on it. I snatched up the dress thinking there was plenty of material in it to make something....but not sure what.
My recent shoulder surgery gave me a few ideas.....and a little bit of time to work on them. I took a good look at the dress and decided on pillows. At first I thought big square pillows would be good (and easy, too, the inserts would be pre made) but since I like a challenge, and didn't really want to fool with buttons, I decided to make two small pillows that would be a good size for travel, or support my poor, miserable arm when I try to sleep. (Forgive my whining. Sorry).
Here are some pictures of the fabric I used.
Each side of the skirt had different embroidered flowers, too pretty to throw away.
I like the natural color of the linen, too.

I made the pillow cases envelope fashion, no zipper. I had to make the pillow inserts to fit the pillows.

Here are the finished pillows. One is a little longer than the other but .......

Not too hard to make. Another unfinished object (UFO) out of the pile, and I sleep better with the little pillow to help support my poor shoulder (sorry, whining again).
I still have quite a bit of fabric left. It was a large dress. I thought a pincushion or two might be nice. Not sure what else but that's the fun of recycling/upcycling.

50’s Redingote and Dress, Looney Tunes, and Pinafores, Featured Patterns

Redingote (def.) a woman's light dress or coat of the 18th century, with an open-fronted skirt, revealing a decorative underskirt. So I guess in the 1950’s this was a designer’s take on the riding coat of the 18th century, just closed at the top to show off the dress underneath. Gorgeous dress.

Sew a Dress for Summer: Butterick 4974

Got a special affair coming up this summer? Maybe a wedding? If you are anything like me, special occasions sort of creep up on me and take me by surprise. Special occasions call for something special to wear, something that says “Look at me. I look so good!” Even not so special occasions can become special. Having the right dress ready to can turn a quick bite into date night.

4974 as Smart Object-1

Butterick 4974 is a pattern for a cute halter dress that is just lovely. Highly recommended on Sewing Pattern Review, it is one of Butterick’s  Fast & Easy patterns. The dress is described as “Close-fitting, above knee, lined halter dress has straps to back with purchased rings, side seam zipper and back slit.”

This pattern is available in GoofingOff Etsy and Artfire shops in size 14-20, bust 36-42.

Pardon the Drywall Dust

I once heard on the radio that owning a house can be a burden as well as a blessing. House ownership is a wonderful thing. For most people, it is the most valuable thing they own. It is the roof over their head, the safe haven they go to for refuge, the place they go to when all is crazy in the world that they can have some control over (at least that is the plan). Home ownership is the American Dream. The ultimate is building one yourself (or at least having one built for you). Then reality sets in, otherwise known as the Burden.

I live in a house built about 20 years ago. Houses, like people, need upkeep. Think paint, floors, walls, you know, EVERYTHING. I am living among drywall dust right now. Did I know the drywall seams along the ceiling were cracking? Yup. That’s why I hired someone to fix it. Did I know the drywall wasn’t screwed down like it was supposed to be? Well….no. Am I surprised? Not really. Can we just fix it right and not go on about it? What color do you want to paint? Paint? Can we finish the drywall first?

That’s how the conversations, and my week has been going. Dusty. Messy. All the furniture sitting in the middle of the poor house (my poor house!!) covered with drop cloths. Piles of stuff in every room for me to bounce off of in the dark like a pinball in an arcade game. The disorder makes me want to wear blinders like a draft horse pulling a cart. Ugh!

I’m skipping Miss Eileen’s Picks this week. Will start again next week….once the dust settles.

Oh, BTW, Congrats to WearTheyAreNow, the winner of last week’s picks and their beautiful red and blue brocade dress.

Fashion Week: Miss Eileen’s Etsy Picks 9.9.11

September is such an important month. Not only is it National Sewing Month but the autumnal equinox occurs, school begins, the Jewish High Holidays are during September, and last, but in no way least, Fashion Week just started. For someone like me, not quite the fashionista, Fashion Week is something that happens in NY and will filter down to my local Wally World eventually, but to a fashionista like my beloved daughter, it is a downright cause for celebration. Lucky her, this year she is going to be in NY for fashion week. Nice. Hope she sends me pictures. I would like to know what I might be wearing (or most likely NOT wearing) next year.
In any case, I’ve been looking around Etsy again for some of the coolest shops with the most wonderful items. I learned a long time ago that cool designs will be copied and mass produced too soon by folks in other lands. Often you will find the coolest on sites like Etsy and Artfire.
Here’s what I found.
Black Leather with Metallic Blue Bow Tie Necklace 14 inch Length Beautiful Repurposed Leather Silver Chain Accessory
Bows are classic but I like the use of leather. A little different but still traditional. Cute and understated.
Blue Inductor Earrings
I still can’t get over the idea these beautiful earrings were once electronic parts. Recycled is always chic.

A style from the 60’s updated. Love it!

Stepping Out - Black Faux Fur and Faux Leather Spats / Corset / Leg Wamers with Silver Embellishment and Charm
Good way to change the look of shoes and these are cool!
Bolero Jacket Shrug In Black Trimed with Elegant Black Chinese Silk Long Sleeved - Custom made to fit
Beautiful shrug that graces any dress it is worn with.
RESERVED for Sherry - CUSTOM Empress Style Dream Coat by Enlightened Platypus

OK, those are my picks. What do you think?

Sewing for Babies

No, this is not like sewing for dummies, it is like “Making things for the babies in your life or who are about to enter your life.” Making something handmade for a new baby is one of the most gratifying things a person can do. In our busy lives it is just too easy, and sometimes almost necessary…or so it seems, to go to the Big Box store and just buy a blanket or whatever. This busy lifestyle makes taking the time to create a baby quilt, sew a dress, or crochet (or knit) a blanket all the more special; it also makes each item created an instant heirloom destined to be treasured and handed down for years to come. While listing patterns I came across a few that can help the person who sews create that very special item that will bring ooohs and ahhs at the next baby shower or baby arrival.

Vintage Simplicity Baby Girl Dress Sewing Pattern Size 6 mons Uncut

This pattern, Simplicity 9353, is size 6 months. Babies grow so fast. A beautiful dress for Passover, Easter, Christmas, or any future family celebration will be so appreciated, especially to a young growing family whose money goes to diapers, child care, and formula.

Baby Accessories Sewing Pattern Simplicity 4636 Uncut Complete

From stroller cover to shopping cart seat protector, Simplicity 4636 has it.

Baby Essentials Sewing Patter McCalls3630 Uncut Complete

McCall’s 3630 includes directions for a quilt, crib caddy, diaper stacker, crib bumper, and dust ruffle. If you know what the decor theme is you can sew accordingly. If not, just use neutral baby-friendly colors to complement the decor.

All of these patterns can help create the heirlooms of tomorrow by creating gifts that come from the heart.

Happy Sewing y’all!

Remember, don’t forget to vote. Contest ends tonight.
