New Listings in GoofingOff Sewing: Be Still My Rockabilly Heart!

It's mid summer and incredibly hot in this part of the world. Summer in north Florida is like this: hot in the morning, rain in the afternoon, hot in the evening. Sometimes we are lucky to get a breeze..and when we do I love to stand in it and savor it. The next best thing is a fan on the front porch blowing while I sit in the front porch swing.  There are times I want to stay outside sans A/C, especially if I am working in the yard. Today darling hubby put up a fan above the swing (had one that died 2 years ago...fan, not the hubby) after I bought a new one. Hooray! Maybe I will sit in the swing and let the fan blow on me (a little, not gale force) during our afternoon shower.
Meanwhile, back at GoofingOff Sewing, there's some new patterns just listed. Some, like the Rockabilly Summer Tops, are perfect for summer...as in now...others good for fall or holiday sewing. Either way, each one has its own charm.

Oriental Influence and Mandarin Collar

I don't know how young I was but I remember my mom, the fashionista, talking about "mandarin collars" and Suzie Wong dresses. I saw the Suzie Wong movie years later and thought about how Hollywood influenced fashion, sort of like the influence The Great Gatsby is having today. Here is a pattern from the late 1950's with "slim-lined Oriental influence....and Mandarin collar."
The envelope is gone with time. The previous owner salvaged parts of the envelope and pasted them on a Manila envelope. Good thing since the front picture and envelope back are in good condition.

A very rare estate sale find.

Turning Heads...Strut Your Stuff

I'm sort of a mousy kind of person. I don't like to draw a lot of attention to myself, just sort of happy being an observer (long time self confidence problem). I love watching people who create an entrance, who are confident enough to pull off anything....or almost anything, with a dramatic flair. So....I went to a conference a while back and sometime through, in walks a woman wearing a dark red cape. She sort of stopped the show without saying a word and without the apologies I would have been making. So envious....not evil envious just wish I had the confidence to do that envious. She later told me it was the cape that did it. When she puts it on she becomes a bit taller, holds her head higher, and looks wonderful....and she did.
Sort of like when I was a clown...I could have fun and act silly with the makeup and the hair...I was another me. Well, sort of like that.

Simplicity 3940 This pattern includes a caplet for Mom, a coat for the young miss, and a matching coat for the fur baby. Talk about turning heads!

Simplicity 9029 Ok, not a cape but dramatic just the same, especially with the detachable fur collar. Imagine going to a Christmas party or the ballet wrapped in this!

New Listings in GoofingOff: Capes, Cape Collars, and Flower Girls

Every have one of those nights where you just can’t sleep? Well, that was me last night. Tossing and turning without a bit of feeling tired, then it hit me. My friend came back from Costa Rica with the most wonderful coffee to share….and share we did, at 5 PM. Not a good time for me to drink coffee if I plan to fall asleep before 1 AM. The time change was enough to mess up my sleep habits (why do we change the clocks? Anyone?) but the caffeine keeps me charged for hours. So….after tossing and turning I surrendered to the coffee and listed patterns. Here they are:

Simplicity 9223 from 1994. One size. Talk about a dramatic entrance!

New Listings in Goofing Off

I found the most adorable patterns from the 60’s. I love the look from then, the big hair teased oh so high, the mini skirts, the shoes, and the jewelry. The models all had this dewy eyed “whatever” kind of look (think Twiggy and Jean Shrimpton).  Well, here are the patterns. Twiggy would have been proud (except she was so skinny they would have hung on her).

Aren’t they wonderful? Just love them!

1967 Fashions

Finally got on the treadmill this morning (yes, that treadmill that my mechanically-minded other half put together) and heard Frankie Valli singing “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” I love that song. A few years ago, my daughter and son-in-law gave the other half and me tickets to see Jersey Boys, the musical about the Four Seasons. It is a wonderful musical and something worth seeing if you get the chance. After seeing the musical it reminded me how much I loved the Four Seasons so when I got the treadmill I made a Pandora Four Seasons station. Not just Four Seasons music but music from that era, a little doo wop, a bit of Beatles, a little Frank Sinatra. Good to walk to. Well, anyway, back to the song.

The song left me thinking about what I was doing back when that song first came out and the fashions from then.

The song was written in 1967 by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio and performed by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.  1967 was the year Aretha Franklin was demanding a little respect, Cream was singing The Sunshine of your Love, and the Moody Blues sang Nights in White Satin.  Muscle cars like the GTO (be still my heart!), the Camaro, the Impala, and the Mustang were on the road (gas was cheap).

My folks didn’t drive anything so cool. We had a 66 Chevy Biscayne.

Women wore big hair  (Thanks, Mom)image0-8 My mom, Big hair

(unless you were a little bit of a hippy in which case you wore it long and sleek or in a fro), short skirts, and clunky shoes.

Here’s a couple of sewing patterns in GoofingOff.etsy from the swinging 60’s.

Well, back to today and my nowadays life. Hope you enjoyed the walk down memory lane with me.
