So the groundhog saw his shadow? How many more weeks of winter? Got snow? Brrrr...Time to sew!

Fashion Week 2012

I must have had a “moment” where I blacked out….well sort of at least. While drinking my bottomless cup of coffee and watching Good Morning America I heard someone say it was Fashion Week. I thought..I Almost Missed Fashion Week! Not that I am a fashionista…..really, I am a jeans and t-shirt gal when I am not in scrubs but my daughter is and SHE is a fashionista. Humph…..to think another all important week almost got by me.

Here’s some of the beautiful evening dresses from the runway to inspire you. Think wedding, prom, homecoming.

 

The fun thing about sewing is with a pattern, needle, thread, a little inspiration, and a bit of know how and you can create something beautiful that is perfect for you.

Barley Girl Fashions

As a seller of sewing supplies, I often wonder what happens after the pattern or fabric leaves my shop. Is the pattern something held dear by a collector or a fashion someone loves and wants to create? Is the fabric turning into pillows or dresses? What happens???!! Well, Katherine Wells, of Barley Girl Fashions must have read my mind. A while back she bought this pattern

“New” Rockabilly Patterns

I love Rockabilly. I love the music, the hair, and the clothes, or more specifically, the dresses. I love the full skirts, especially when it hits below the knee, worn with heels. Gorgeous.

Well, this weekend I listed uncut and complete patterns from the 1950’s. True Rockabilly fashion ready for a crinoline. Here’s a sample:

Bridal Gowns and Other Fancy Dresses

Today I sold a bridal gown pattern to a young woman new to sewing who asked me a few questions about sewing a gown. I don't sew as much as I used to. Most of the time I would sew my own scrub tops (not the pants, too easy to buy them), tank tops, and skirts but not dresses. I just don't wear them much. Every so often though I would find the need to wear something fancy. After going to the store to see how much the dresses cost I would come home determined to make one myself. Along the way I have learned a few things I think I need to share. 1)Choose your fabrics carefully and according to the suggestions on the pattern. Some fabrics flow and lay better than others according to the cut of the pattern (or visa-versa). 2)Follow your instructions to the letter. I find I do good the first time I make something and not as good the second because I don't follow the instructions as well. My fault. 3) Measure twice, cut once. Applies to wood, glass, metal, and fabric. 4) Double check the layout instructions especially if the fabric is printed on one side or has a finish on one side. If it is cut wrong you won't be able to reverse it. (Don't ask how I found that one out. Had to go back to the store to get more fabric to fix that one. What a mess.) 5) Get help on the final touches like the hem, maybe a tailor or someone with a little experience. If you spend that much time making a beautiful dress, don't skimp on the final touches. They make a big difference. I am so excited for her. I can't wait to see how her dress comes out. I bet she'll look like a fairy tale princess.

Fabrics: Cotton and cotton blends, pique, rayon and rayon blends, lightweight linen, lightweight crepe. Dress is suitable for border prints. Easy Stitch n Save 3480 by McCall's Dress in two lengths. This is my bargain special. Cute dress, easy to whip up. Why not? Fabrics: Rayon and Rayon blends, lightweight crepe, soft linen, cotton interlock, cotton and cotton blends, soft faille.
