Winter Trees, Cupcakes, Apples and Pears, Deck of Cards, Vintage Roses, and Skeletons: Fabric at GoofingOff
Sometimes I think I’m a hoarder. I look around my sewing room and see stacks of beautiful fabric and think “Yep, that’s what you are…a hoarder.” Then I see the hoarder show on TV and feel a lot better. My hoard (otherwise known as my stash) only has to do with fabric and stays in one, maybe two, OK three places in my house. I don’t have a little path through the house (ok, I do have a path in the sewing room….does that count?). So, while I decide whether I need counseling, or, more to the point, which one to go to, check out the new fabric at GoofingOff.
Winter Trees by Fabric Traditions
Red Dice and Face Cards on Black by Shamash & Sons
Vintage red roses on yellow fabric
Robert Kaufman’s Bad to the Bone fabric
Apples and Pears Blue from the Alexander Henry Home collection.
Cupcakes from the Robert Kaufman Confection Collection.
So, tell me, am I a hoarder? Never mind, don’t answer that.
Happy Sewing! Keep those seams straight!

These Boots Are Made for Dancing!
No, dancing, not walking. That was Nancy Sinatra’s hit song from 1966. Those girls are wearing some pretty short mini dresses…..and check out the boots! Awesome! Love the spike heel.
The boots I’m referring to are these:
Vintage Western Orange and blue with red inserts
Vintage Granny Boots by Justin
Vintage Western boots in red, black, and white.
You can do some “Waltzing Across Texas” in boots like these. They are all in Miss Eileen’s vintage shop. International shipping is always available.

Fashion Week 2012
I must have had a “moment” where I blacked out….well sort of at least. While drinking my bottomless cup of coffee and watching Good Morning America I heard someone say it was Fashion Week. I thought..I Almost Missed Fashion Week! Not that I am a fashionista…..really, I am a jeans and t-shirt gal when I am not in scrubs but my daughter is and SHE is a fashionista. Humph…..to think another all important week almost got by me.
Here’s some of the beautiful evening dresses from the runway to inspire you. Think wedding, prom, homecoming.
The fun thing about sewing is with a pattern, needle, thread, a little inspiration, and a bit of know how and you can create something beautiful that is perfect for you.
Happy Sewing Month!

Typing the Summer Away
I’ve always been a busy kind of person, you know, the kind that needs to stay busy. I have a hard time sitting still and being a couch potato so when my parents asked me if I wanted to go to summer school when I was in 6th grade I jumped at the chance. I wasn’t behind in any classes so I got to study anything. Two classes out of a list. I don’t remember all the choices but I do remember I picked sewing and typing. Sewing because I was intrigued with the idea of creating something and typing because…….I thought it would come in handy someday (My mother said I could always use it at work if I worked in an office; I never thought I’d use as a nurse).
The book we used looked sort of like this one:
We had a chart for finger placement. I had to memorize it….Good thing since the keys on a computer are about the same. Not 100% but close enough.
We used a typewriter sort of like one of these. By the end of the six weeks I could type 30 words a minute, faster if you didn’t count the mistakes….but they did. Later, when I took typing again, I got to use an electric typewriter. My speed dropped to 25 words a minute (mistakes again). I definitely wasn’t intended to work in the typing pool. Later my mom encouraged me to learn stenography….”Anyone can type but a good stenographer makes money” she said. Never got over 100 wpm.
Oh well, not everyone should work in an office. Some of us needs to find cool things to sell on Etsy….like this cool book.

Sewing Traditions for Christmas….New Jammies
Sometimes coming up with new gift ideas for Christmas and Chanukah is difficult. Kids grow up, tastes change, styles change. Keeping things fresh is a challenge…but then, there is something to be said for tradition, for doing the same thing, with a little twist, every year.
I recently posted this adorable pajama sewing pattern on Facebook. Simplicity 1785 in Size 2 from the 1950’s.
Someone left this comment....”these always remind me of my mother. She made each of us a pair of new pajamas to go to bed in every Christmas Eve...made it extra special.”
New pajamas for Christmas Eve. A practical gift made into a magical tradition that created fond memories lasting much longer than the pajamas. A fabulous idea.

Homemade Coleslaw
Good coleslaw is so yummy. It’s a perfect companion to a sandwich, has it’s own place of honor with fish, and needs to be present at a barbecue. I was going to break down and buy some at the store….until I almost choked at the price. It’s made of cabbage, green cabbage, not gold, and cabbage is cheap, like 35 cents a pound. So, with my mathematical brain, I figured it would be much cheaper to buy a cabbage and use part of it for coleslaw and the other part for stuffed cabbage. One make-ahead supper in the freezer and one yummy side dish. Here’s the coleslaw recipe:
You need 1 medium head of cabbage (about 2-3 pounds)
1/3 cup of apple cider vinegar
1 cup mayonnaise
1/4 cup of dried cranberries (Craisins)
1/4 cup slivered almonds
Rinse the cabbage under cold, running water. Let drain. Chop the cabbage fine. You can use a food processor if you’d like, just be careful not to let it chop too fine and create a paste.
The cabbage should look like this:
Mix the vinegar and mayonnaise together.
Add the dressing to the cabbage mixture. Voila! That’s it. Let it set in the refrigerator overnight for the flavors to meld together.
Note: you can substitute raisins for the dried cranberries. The dried cranberries are sold in the store as Craisins from the Ocean Spray company.
For a sweeter coleslaw add sugar, Splenda, or honey to the vinegar/mayonnaise mixture.
You can use other nuts if you don’t have almonds on hand. I used walnuts this time.

Ralph Lauren, Dramatic Capes, Fanciful Felines, Asian Styling, and Soft Trucks
New pattern listings in the GoofingOff Sewing Supplies shop.
Evening gown with halter neckline, Ralph Lauren designer
Add a touch of drama with these gorgeous capes.
Fanciful Cats, Pricilla and Percival, McCall’s 4531.
Soft trucks for the little ones.
Design your own Asian style outfit with Simplicity 9868.
I also listed some extra wide bias tape and hand-made pincushions. The pincushions were made by moi (didn’t know I could speak French, did ya?). I cut the bias tape, too. I like my bias tape a little wider than I can find in the stores. I figure there’s a few folks out there that feel the same.
Happy Stitching! Keep those seams straight!
