Almost September

What is it about September? September is always a big deal for me....when I was young it was the first day of school and all that goes with that....the new clothes, school supplies, and meeting new people.
My sisters and I. I'm the one in the middle...with the necklace. Oh, so fashionable.

It was, and is, the anticipation of the Jewish New Year....wearing your best and getting together with family.....and hearing the shofar blown at the synagogue.

In NY September is the return of cool air and the smell of apples in the air as the first of the apple crop came in from upstate.

NY State produces lots of apples, like Cortlands and MacIntosh, two of my favorites and they are very good for you. Love them.
It's still special now. The kids are back in school and the buses are on the road with their precious cargo.

It's hurricane season in this part of the world and the hubby watches the weather faithfully (old fisherman).

The remnants of Tropical Storm Erika....we dodged that one. Good thing because we've had a lot of rain....almost over the road. Picture courtesy of the Weather.com
So...Halloween is about 2 months away and the 5th Annual Costume Sewing Pattern Sale starts Tuesday. All costume sewing patterns at GoofingOff Sewing will be 40% off for the month of September. There's over 100 to choose from with more being listed. The patterns will already be marked down.
See, September is still a special month.

Typing the Summer Away

I’ve always been a busy kind of person, you know, the kind that needs to stay busy. I have a hard time sitting still and being a couch potato so when my parents asked me if I wanted to go to summer school when I was in 6th grade I jumped at the chance. I wasn’t behind in any classes so I got to study anything. Two classes out of a list. I don’t remember all the choices but I do remember I picked sewing and typing. Sewing because I was intrigued with the idea of creating something and typing because…….I thought it would come in handy someday (My mother said I could always use it at work if I worked in an office; I never thought I’d use as a nurse).

The book we used looked sort of like this one:

Vintage 1957 20th Century Typewriting Book Elementary Course

We had a chart for finger placement. I had to memorize it….Good thing since the keys on a computer are about the same. Not 100% but close enough.

We used a typewriter sort of like one of these. By the end of the six weeks I could type 30 words a minute, faster if you didn’t count the mistakes….but they did.  Later, when I took typing again, I got to use an electric typewriter. My speed dropped to 25 words a minute (mistakes again). I definitely wasn’t intended to work in the typing pool. Later my mom encouraged me to learn stenography….”Anyone can type but a good stenographer makes money” she said. Never got over 100 wpm.

Oh well, not everyone should work in an office. Some of us needs to find cool things to sell on Etsy….like this cool book.

Back to School Miss Eileen’s Etsy Finds 8.26.11

Morning everyone! It’s time for Miss Eileen’s Etsy Picks for the week of 8/26/2011. With all the talk of Hurricane Irene I need something to distract me a bit and I can’t think of anything better than looking through Etsy. Are the kids back in school now? Getting ready? My first day of 1st grade was delayed by a hurricane. Looks like a few other kids will have their first day delayed, too.

Here’s my picks for the week:

School Dazed

Education plays an important role in nursing. From the time I thought about becoming a nurse, I was involved in school, continually challenging myself to do more and do better. Once I received my degree, I was on my way to making money. I could hold a job that paid well and commanded respect. I was a professional. I was a nurse. It didn’t take me too long to realize that an Associate’s degree was on the bottom rung of the RN ladder but with a family to raise, I didn’t feel ready to go back for my BSN. Oh, I tried to go back by taking a class or two every so often, but something would always get me sidetracked. After twenty-plus years as an ADN nurse, I finally went back to school for my BSN. Now that I am just about done (one more class to go, Yippee!), I’d like to share a few things I’ve learned along the way. Commitment: I tried to go back before but I was too easily sidetracked. This time I was committed to do whatever it took to get the job done. I developed a routine for studying and writing papers that no one (well, almost no one) could change. I felt like I grew an umbilical cord to my computer. Where ever I went, it went. I even named it. Her name is Sam. Help: I was terrified of Algebra (I still get shivers up and down my spine) and Statistics. Algebra beat me up once (black eye; couldn’t see for 3 days) and I was determined not to let it get me again. This time I found a tutor long before the class started and studied algebra every day just so it would be fresh in my mind. I even found a computer program to use and play with algebra when my assignments were completed. Somehow, I did it right this time because I passed Algebra I & II then went on to kick butt in Statistics but I’m no fool. I had help. I couldn’t have done it alone. Mentoring: I have one official mentor (on paper) and about 3 real live ones. I needed someone to help me through the application process, the reimbursement process, even the picking-out-the-right-school-for-me process. They are the people who listened to me moan and groan about my work and said “You can do it” and meant it. They’d read over my papers and correct the dumb mistakes (OK, I’m not perfect). They’d give me the push (or kick in the tush) I needed when I needed it. Timing: I went back on my time, not someone else’s. Yes, I am hard headed, been that way all my life and most likely won’t change now so I used that to my advantage. The timing was right for me despite the fact that I am not a twenty-something with fantastic texting ability know 50 ways to use a computer or any other electronic gadget. I am a fifty-something grandma who had to learn Power Point, Word (there’s symbols in there I’ve never seen before), and to use a computer for more than EBay shopping. The best part of being my age and going back to school is the kids are grown, I don’t have to cook if I don’t want to, and I can afford to have a housekeeper (not daily, please, be real). The only one vying for my attention is my significant other (I just love calling him that) and he knows how to cook. Well, that’s it. I’ve learned other things but those are the biggies. Just six more weeks to go and I can do the walk, and I will do the walk with pride.

School Break

Another class down and just 2 more to go. I can't believe I am almost there. I've been so busy working on school work that I haven't done much else. Dan has though. He is kicking butt. His wrought iron garden gate caught a lot of attention. He also finished the smoker and donated it to the DAV. There was a ceremony and he received a plaque, the newspaper was even there. I am so proud. He is really showing what he can do.

Just about done with another class, Epidemiology, so I can get back to blogging about life. The class wasn't too bad with an awesome professor. A few more classes and I will be able to walk for my BSN diploma. It's been a journey for me but I am enjoying it. I wish I had done it sooner. I could blame putting it off on lots of things, kids, marriage, money, and those are all good reasons, partly true, but the real reason was me. Hard headed, I wanted to do more than nursing, something else besides nursing. I still do but that's O.K. A Bachelor's degree is a degree well-earned and I am working damned hard for it. I am going to walk with my head held high when I get that diploma. It's been a long time coming.
