Lace and Lacy Crochet

 In my last post I showed examples of crochet that somewhat mimic lace or that have a lacy affect. Here are a few more examples of crochet and tatted lace from my collection. 

This candy cane comes with its own crochet jacket. It was made by my friend, Sally Criswell. She sells her beautiful crochet in her Etsy shop, Sally's Xstitch.

Sometimes a stitcher would use rick rack and add crochet to the tape. The stitcher who made this used red rick rack and applied white cotton thread to dress it up.  The lace measures 1" wide. It is a little more than 1 yard long. (from my personal collection)

Hand tatted lace. The stitcher used fine cotton thread, number 80 wt was most commonly used, to make these colorful bits of tatting. Each piece is approximately 4 inches long....long enough to make a collar for a doll's dress or add to a crazy quilt.

Free Tatting Flower Pattern

Do you tat? Are you thinking of taking it up? Well, here’s a pattern I found in that old loose leaf notebook I bought at a thrift shop a while back.

Cute little white flowers with yellow centers. The pattern originally came from the March, 1979 issue of Better Homes and Gardens. The flowers are oh-so-delicate and sweet. Here’s the pattern as it was in the magazine. It includes abbreviations, a brief history of tatting, and a pattern for the doily, too. Vintage Crochet Booklets--Star Books

Well, I finally took some time away from my school work to inventory some of my Vogue patterns. I just love them. The styles of the outfits are incredible to say the least. I just wish I had enough time to sew some of them. I came into some wonderful old pattern booklets from the 1940's and 1950's. They are for crocheting and tatting. I already listed one of the booklets on Etsy; it's called Pot Holders: Hot Plate Covers, Swedish Embroidery. It has directions for numerous pot holders, a BBQ mitt for Dad, and directions for Swedish embroidery. What fun! The other booklets I will be listing in the Goofing Off shop are "Handkerchief Edgings" from 1948, "Handkerchief Edgings" from 1953, "Spreads that are Different in Motifs easy to make" from 1949, "Pillow Cases, Decorative Crochet" from 1950, "Ruffled Doilies and the Pansy Doily" form 1948, and "Crocheted Chairbacks, Church Laces, Shade Pulls" from 1954. With the exception of Pillow Cases, these booklets were published by the American Thread Company of New York and are called Star books. Each one is numbered as in a series. Take a look. They are very unique with lots of wonderful patterns that can still be fresh today.
