Miss Eileen's Vintage Scarves

I have to start off by saying I love vintage scarves.  Whenever I see a beautiful vintage scarf I am reminded of Hedy Lamar....the scene in the movie "Come Live With Me." She took a scarf, wrapped it around her head into a turban and captivated James Stewart. Glamourous. Just glamourous. Here's a few beauties I found on my trip to Petaluma, California. I couldn't just drink wine....there's lots of vintage stores to pick through.

What to Make with Boutique Yarns

After a trip to the local thrift shop I found myself well-stocked with boutique yarns, read Sashay and Boutique Ribbons. After a while I sat and thought "What does one do with this gorgeous stuff besides making scarves?" Here's a few ideas I found around the web:

Ribbon Remix Scarf uses 1 skein of Red Heart Soft, 1 skein of Red Heart Boutique Sashay, 2 yards of grosgrain ribbon, 1 1/2 inches wide, 5mm (size H-8) hook, and a yarn needle.

Knit a Lei Scarf designed by Anneliese Anneliese. There's an easy to follow tutorial or print out the downloadable instructions.
You'll need:
  • One skein Red Heart Boutique Ribbons yarn (I chose "Fire")
  • Size 8 circular knitting needles, 32 inches long
  • Sewing needle and thread for finishing

How about a crocheted ruffled skirt? This pattern is sized for the little ones, sizes 2-4, designed by Amy at Crochet Creative Creations.

Crochet Hook: I/9 or 5.5 mm hook
Yarn Weight: (4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
How about a purse? This is so cute. This is from Dearest Debi. She has a written pattern and a tutorial.

You'll need a skein of Bernat Satin and a skein of Boutique Sashay Yarn, a size I (9) hook and a size J (10) hook.

So, there's a few things to do with this beautiful yarn I think a pillow would look good. Maybe flowers to add to a headband. How about a few ruffles on a little girl's skirt? So much to do. So much I want to do. Sleep is so over rated.

Knitting Fashion: A Hook in Each Hand

Ever see a shop on Etsy that just takes your breath away, leaves you so inspired you want to make everything but know you can’t, leaves you hungry for more? Well, that’s how I feel about Knitting Fashion. After seeing her shop I just had to see more and share all I found out with the world. Here is her interview.

CARMEN - romantic and chic elegant bridal white bolero wrap shrug                        Carmen Romantic and Elegant Bolero in Bridal White

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, affiliations, personal stuff)

My name is Albena Petrova and I live in small beautiful Bulgaria, in my pretty house with my lovely family .

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Knitting and crocheting take most of my time yet in my free time I enjoy experimenting, meeting new people, and visiting familiar and unfamiliar places. Over the past year a group of friends and I started a community http://www.flickr.com/photos/threadsthatconnectus/ with the purpose of acquiring new skills in weaving. We are going to make an international exhibition this May.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Inspiration has never left me. I am usually inspired by colors, shapes and feelings. I think I am an “yarnholic.” Can’t live without yarn in my hands. My inspiration comes from books, net culture, and magazines, too. I am a people watcher.

Who is, or was, your greatest inspiration?

ETSY! I’m in love in ETSY. It took me more than an year to find it but I‘m happy to be a part of this amazing community!

ETSY is my life, my passion, my greatest inspiration. I love these friendly and creative people. I have so many friends all over the world!

Fashion White Shrug Bolero               Fashion White Shrug Bolero

What are your favorite materials? Your favorite color combination?

I love  yarns, fabrics, felt, and wood. My favorite colors are orange and green but I love every color.

Crocheted Freeform Brooch                                     Crocheted Freeform Brooch

What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it?

To be honest  I can’t really remember my very first creation yet I can clearly remember my first experience with sewing. When I was thirteen I found a big piece of fabric and I decided to make a dress. Later I found out that the very same piece of fabric was enough to make more than four dresses yet I made only one. With the professional advice of my grandmother the dress was repaired and I enjoyed wearing it more than two years.

How do you get out of your creative ruts?

I enjoy doing yoga, jogging, going out with my  friends and surfing the Internet, reading books, and knitting….knitting.

Summer Fashion Accessories - handcrochet bandana/headband in HOT PINK                       Summer Fashion Accessory Headband

Describe your creative process.

Knitting is a lonely occupation. Usually some ideas come up the moment I touch the yarn but others take months. I often work on several projects at the same time because ideas come up unexpectedly. The color combinations inspire me. I like to mold colors. Usually I buy yarn for the colors and texture, then I decide what form of knitting will be made. I have found many ways to give a different form of a right piece of fabric.

What is your most cherished handmade possession?

Personally I cherish everything that comes out of my hands because it is created with much passion and love.

What have been the most valuable lessons learned from other artists?

To be yourself – unique, colorful and special.

Miss Eileen’s Etsy Picks: Count Down to Christmas

Looking for gifts for the guys in your life? Let me give you a virtual hand.
Well, Thanksgiving was yesterday and that means the official start of the Christmas season. It doesn’t matter that the stores have been putting Christmas items on the shelves back in September, this is the REAL start of the season. From now until the 25th, I can watch Christmas movies, like “Miracle on 34th Street” (the original with Natalie Wood) and “It’s a Wonderful Life,” as much as I want without feeling weird. It also means the pressure is on to find the right gifts for the people on your list. Ugh, the stress! So much to do! Like you need one more thing to worry about, right? So, let me give you a hand, a virtual one. How about gifts for the guys in your life?

Curly Girl Crochet: Beautiful Creations from Yarn

A couple of weeks ago Etsy artists from the beautiful state of Michigan were featured in Miss Eileen’s Etsy Picks. Here is Curly Girl Crochet, one of the talented Etsians from Michigan.

Trellis Scarf Trellis Scarf

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, affiliations, personal stuff)

My name is Jodie Creguer and I live in Byron Center, Michigan USA, along with my hubby and two young children. I am happy and proud to be a Michigander. I love our beautiful state! I love spending time with my family, crocheting, reading, watching movies, and gardening.

What are your favorite materials?

My favorite materials are yarn and vintage buttons. I love any kind of yarn - if it catches my eye, I buy it and make something gorgeous with it! I have loved buttons, especially vintage ones, ever since I was a young girl and my grandma used to let me sort through her beautiful tin full of buttons.

Tote Bag in Blues and Greens    Tote Bag in Blues and Greens

What is your favorite color combination?

I love all colors, but especially reds, greens, orange, and turquoise blue. At the moment my favorite color combination is blue and green.

What is the first thing you can remember making by hand? How and why did you make it?

The first thing I remember making by hand were potholders when I was around 9 or 10. I had a potholder kit that came with a loom and different color loops that you weaved across to make the potholders. I sold them door to door in my neighborhood (yes, I started young!).

Mixed Berries Scarf  Mixed Berries Scarf

What inspires you?

Many things inspire me. Things I see inspire me, but first and foremost, colors inspire me. Often when I see a yarn and love the color(s) I can picture in my mind what I can make with it and then I'm off and running! Sometimes I will look at the sky as the sun is setting and think "Those colors would make a beautiful scarf!"

Embroidered Flower Cuff     Embroidered Flower Cuff

Where do your ideas come from?

My ideas often come from conversations I have with friends and family. Friends and family are always good resources for ideas. Also, sometimes I will see a yarn/yarn color and I just know it will make a beautiful scarf, shawl, etc.

Harvest Cowl     Harvest Cowl

Who is, or was, your greatest inspiration?

My greatest inspiration are my customers. I have had wonderful feedback from my customers and they share stories with me about how they are enjoying something I made. I also love hearing from customers who tell me funny and sweet stories about how their cats are enjoying their cat toys. Many have sent me pictures of their cats enjoying their toys and one customer even sent me a video of her cat playing with her new toys! Stories like this warm my heart. I couldn't ask for better inspiration!

Robins Egg Blue Cotton Coasters        Robin’s Egg Blue Coasters

What is your favorite thing to do with your creativity?

My favorite thing to do with my creativity is to share it with others through my crocheted creations. I love knowing that someone is enjoying their soft, warm shawl that I made or that their cat's are playing with and enjoying their new toys that I made.

Why should people buy handmade? Any tips of wisdom on selling handmade items?

People should buy handmade because by doing so you are supporting a true artist. Handmade items beat mass made items hands down in their quality, uniqueness, and creativity. Love, pride, and thought go into each stitch, each piece, and it shows. I would rather buy a unique, one of a kind creation that no one else has from an artist rather than a mass produced piece that everyone has.

What have been the most valuable lessons learned from other artists?

The most valuable thing I have learned from other artists is that there is a real person behind every shop. I have met so many wonderful friends on Etsy!
FREE SHIPPING - Shawl in Blue and Brown Shawl in Blue and Brown

Apart from creating things, what do you do?

Apart from running my online Shop, I have run a licensed day care in my home for the past 3 years and take care of my two young children. I love it! Every day is an adventure :)

What are the Web addresses for your work?

I just love Curly Girl’s work. Very pretty. The 10% discount is good, too. Just right to help you get started on your Christmas and Chanukah shopping. Order those gifts now and kick back later, maybe make cookies or just enjoy the holidays without so much fuss.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I am officially Barbara Perelman and I live in York PA. My studio is in the basement of my house and I loving call it "The Cave". I am a retired engineer and have been in business full time for 6 (OMG!) years.

What are your favorite materials?

I usually work in acrylic because of the ease of care and the availability of bright colors. I have recently started working in bamboo by request of my customers. It is eco-friendly and so soft.

Cactus- Yarnius Crochetius                 Cactus Yarnius Crochetius

What inspires you?

My customers are my greatest inspiration. My best sellers have come from their ideas! The latest request was a baby blanket that looks like a "Hello" sticker. Turned out great and I added it to the line.

Where do your ideas come from?

I have a white board in my studio. I put down any ideas that pop into my head. When I feel bored I work on one of the ideas. Periodically I weed the ideas out.

Rosh Hashanah Challah Cover                         Rosh Hashanah Challah Cover

What is your favorite thing to do with your creativity?

My favorite thing is to design new products. I am a machine knitter and it takes a LOT of time to go from concept to product. All my designs are original. I use no patterns.

Personalized Knit Scarf and Beenie  Personalized Knit Scarf and Beenie

Why should people buy handmade? Any tips of wisdom on selling handmade items?

Hand made is unique. Most of my work is personalized. You can't find this in mass produced. I can work with the customer to get the exact thing that they had in mind. There is a little bit of both of us in the final product. Selling? Diversify!!! I sell online at Etsy, have my own website, wholesale to online shops and B&M stores. I also sell bulk to schools - hats and scarves with the school name and colors.

What have been the most valuable lessons learned from other artists?I have learned that we all really care about what we sell. It is a little piece of us going out to the customer.
